The Bee hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) is the smallest bird in the world measuring no longer than 5cm long and weighing only 1.8 grams. It inhabits the coastal forests of the island of Cuba, with strongholds in the Zapata swamp and Guanahacabibes peninsula. Numbers have fallen dramatically in the last decade as hurricanes have become incresingly frequent in the caribbean, perhaps due to the effects of human-induced climate change.
